Injury fear for Italians as Inzaghi hobbles off: [SPORTS SUPPLEMENT Edition]Marzocchi, Massimo.  The Scotsman; Edinburgh (UK). 27 May 2002: 4.

ITALY striker Filippo Inzaghi has suffered an injury scare a week before his team's opening World Cup game.

Inzaghi picked up a knee injury during a 2-1 warm-up win over Japanese J-League champions Kashima Antlers yesterday.

The AC Milan striker put the Italians ahead in the 13th minute but immediately limped off for treatment on the same left knee he had operated on earlier this season. After returning to the pitch he was taken off 16 minutes later by coach Giovanni Trapattoni.

Italian team doctor Andrea Ferretti said Inzaghi would undergo a scan today on his knee. "He had a problem with his left knee, it's too early to say any more," Ferretti said.

"The knee is not swollen but there was pain which increased as time went on. To understand fully we need to wait for the scans," the doctor added.

Inzaghi underwent an operation on his knee in December and was out of action until March. He quickly returned to full fitness and form, though, and it is not clear if the current injury is related to the ligament damage he suffered before.

Inzaghi limped out of the stadium and declined to talk to reporters but his strike partner, Christian Vieri of San Siro rivals Internazionale, who scored Italy's second goal, said his close friend was clearly upset to have picked up an injury just days before Italy's opening group G match against Ecuador in Sapporo.

"His morale is a bit down, he has a little pain in his knee." said Vieri. "We all hope it is not serious."

Twenty-eight-year-old Inzaghi has established himself as firstchoice partner to Vieri but should he be sidelined by the injury, Trapattoni has Roma forward Vincenzo Montella and Alessandro del Piero of Juventus as alternatives. The coach was also boosted by the return of Roma's Francesco Totti after a month out with a thigh injury.

Italy were in control with Vieri scoring the other goal but it was still a far from convincing performance from the Azzurri, who also face Croatia and Mexico in group G.
