With Sports-Soccer-Euro 2000-Turkey-Italy Coach earns some breathing room, but questions remain

After handling months of criticism, coach Dino Zoff knows Italy's debut victory over outsider Turkey in the European Championship earned his team some breathing space. About one day's worth.

''It's just for 24 hours,'' a smiling Zoff told reporters after Sunday's 2-1 win, predicting a short respite from nagging questions about the perennial powerhouse's recent lackluster play.

Despite the two goals and a host of other scoring opportunities, the game ultimately could not put to rest the central Azzurri concern: the absence of center forward Christian Vieri.

Though his replacement, Filippo Inzaghi, scored the winning goal, it came thanks to the questionable awarding of a penalty with 20 minutes to go.

Otherwise the Juventus striker's performance only highlighted the loss of Vieri, who was forced to miss the Euros with a thigh injury.

Inzaghi, who lacks Vieri's size and strength, had trouble converting several good first-half scoring opportunities set up by playmakers Francesco Totti and Stefano Fiore, including a wide-open header that went well past the post in the 17th minute.

''We created a lot of opportunities, we must be able to take advantage of them,'' Zoff said. ''I hope in the next matches we can do that.''

Italy, which came into the match with a mediocre 7-6-4 record under Zoff, hadn't scored in its last five road matches.

They will be playing co-host Belgium in a top-of-the-table Group B match Wednesday. The Belgians also won 2-1 in its first game against Sweden.

Zoff, who captained Italy's winning 1982 World Cup squad, opted to start Sunday's game without the Azzurri's other marquee name, Alessandro Del Piero, a teammate of Inzaghi on Juventus of Turin.

Del Piero, who is not a pure striker, replaced Fiore in the second half and immediately fired a free kick that hit the crossbar.

Inzaghi, who dedicated his goal to Vieri, rode the wave of the win, which he said should silence the critics.

''We played a great match. We could have scored five or six times, but the ball was unwilling to cross the goalline,'' he said. ''This victory gives a great answer to everybody.''

Another Juventus standout, Antonio Conte, scored Italy's first goal, knocking in an acrobatic bicycle kick seven minutes into the second half. Turkey's Buruk Okan responded with a header 10 minutes later before Inzaghi's goal clinched the win.

And even on defense, which has been the backbone of this season's Azzurri, their one weak point surfaced again against Turkey as Okan's goal was the fourth straight given up on a close range header from a free kick.
